The Leather Pants Dilemma

Hace algunas semanas me di cuenta de que nunca había probado un par de pantalones de cuero. Nunca he tenido ninguno, ni siquiera de polipiel. Durante mis años universitarios y post-universitarios unos pantalones de piel eran lo más out que te podías imaginar: o eras tachada de ser como la del anuncio de la colonia barata Jacks o simplemente pertenecías a la pandilla de góticos del instituto. Ninguna de las dos facetas iba conmigo. Esta temporada el cuero nos invade y los pantalones con este formato, más. ¿Y qué decir de la prenda fetiche de las neoyorquinas? Pero es que pensándolo bien unos pantalones de cuero bien puestos, quedan muy muy bien. La piel tiene que ser suave, pegarse a las piernas como si se tratase de unas medias o unos leggings y el corte de la prenda no debe dejar que las nalgas caigan demasiado, aunque tampoco se pretenda un efecto push-up. Y la mejor parte es que abrigan un montón.

Para llegar a esta conclusión inicié hace unos días una serie de mini-excursiones por las tiendas de lujo de Shanghai. Me dije: si te vas a probar pantalones de cuero, por lo menos, que sean buenos. 

Os lo cuento por orden de prueba. No lo he hecho aposta, pero el resultado va de menor a mayor.

Lo siento por las gemelas Olsen, pero han querido hacerlos tan ceñidos pero a la vez con una piel quizás menos tratada... que son un tanto difíciles de poner... y después hay que respirar. No quiero darlo todo por perdido con este modelo, pero no pude conseguir una talla más para probar.

A partir de aquí la cosa empieza a pintar bien. Es como vestir unos vaqueros pitillos pero con estructura que milagrosamente se amoldan a las piernas, a las caderas. Sólo un pero personal: me sobra media talla.

Theory lo tiene todo en básicos pero con un toque especial. Escogí tres modelos diferentes y es difícil escoger uno. Todos ellos sientan como un guante. Fue como meterse en un par de leggings usadas pero todo sigue en su sitio. Las mejores, el modelo 'Miana' con ese especie de corte a lo largo de la pierna.

En una casa como Helmut Lang no podían faltar unos pitillos de cuero, donde todo ronda entre el blanco, negro y gris. Estos parecen como una segunda piel y la costura que se desliza a lo largo de las piernas ayuda a que esta estructura no decaiga en ningún momento.

Todo este periplo de tienda en tienda, entrando y saliendo del probador, mareando al dependiente de turno que no tiene ni idea de que no me voy a comprar ni una sola prenda porque todas ellas se escapan muy lejos de mi presupuesto... todo esto por lo menos ha cobrado su sentido. Ahora sé que puedo llevar unos pantalones de cuero sin sentirme como el cantante de Europe. Y es más, a partir de ahora van a formar parte de mi wishlist para el armario de invierno. Cada vez que me enfundaba en uno de ellos me repetía a mí misma... qué calentito se está aquí dentro. Chicas de Manhattan, ahora os entiendo perfectamente. Los pantalones de cuero no es que sólo estén de moda, sino que con las temperaturas gélidas que os gastáis por allí es totalmente lógico que os embutáis en un par de ellos.

Some weeks ago I just realized that I've never had tried a pair of leather pants on. I've never had ones, not even fake leather/PU. At college and post-college era, a pair of leather pants was the most thing out you can imagine; either you could be faulted to be like that explosive woman on a leather jumpsuit for the cheap perfume Jacks commercial on TV either you just belonged to the gothic group at high school. None of these facets are for me. This season leather is all around us and pants in this format, even more. And what can I say about the fetiche piece for newyorkers? But if you think about it deeply... a pair of well-fitted leather pants look really really awsome. Leather must be soft, stick on your legs as if it was a pair of stockings or leggings, and the pattern of the piece mustn't let your butt look down, although there is no intention for a push-up effect. And the best part is that they are really warm. I reached all these conclusions because some days ago I started a series of mini-trips to different luxury stores in Shanghai. I told myself: if you're going to try some leather pants, they must be good at least.

The details are by order of fitting. It's not on purpose, but the results go from normal to wonderful.

I'm sorry for the Olsen twins, but they have wanted to design them so skinny but with a less flexible leather at the same time... that it's a little bit hard to get inside them... and after that you still have to breathe. I don't want to give it all up with this model because I couldn't try one size more.

From this point on everything is getting better. It's like wearing skinny jeans but with some structure, which they miraculously adapt to legs and hips. Just a personal but: I have half size left.

THEORY
Theory is all about basics with a special touch. I picked up three different models and I cannot tell which one to choose. All of them fit like a glove in your hand. It was like getting into a pair of leggings that you've been using for a while but everything is still in its place. The best ones, the 'Miana' style with that cut along the leg.

In a brand like Helmut Lang skinny leather pants are a must among all white, black and grey pieces. These pants look like a second skin and the seam that slides down the legs helps to keep that structure up.

All this tour from one shop to the other, going in and out from the fitting room, bothering the staff on dutty who has no idea that I'm not going to buy any of those pieces because all of them are really far away from my budget... all these have made sense in the end. Now I know that I'm able to wear a pair of leather pants without feeling like Europe singer. Furthermore, from now on these pants are entering my wishlist for winter season. Each time I was getting inside of one of those pairs I repeated to myself: how warm and nice is to be here. Girls from Manhattan, now I understand you perfectly. It's not only that leather pants are fashion now, but also that with the icy temperatures you have over there it's reasonable that you stuff in a pair of those.
