Bicycle Memories

Shopping around old Shanghai

Republic Bike via S Moda

Yeah! It's me riding the tricycle!

Vintage G.A.C., BH and Orbea bicycles

At the French Concession in Shanghai

I’ve been seeing bicycles everywhere for a while. Ok, I live in China and the bicycle is the main mean of transport. But when I’m not in China I see bicycles everywhere as well. I belong to a culture and generation in which a bicycle was for poor people or we kids used it to play and get away looking for some adventure, or for cycling amateurs; but a Perico Delgado’s (Spanish former professional road bicycle racer who won almost everything in the 80’s)bicycle style was always quite uncomfortable for me. Nobody commuted by bicycle in Spain. And suddenly… ta-daah… we collect bikes in the garage, in the attic, at grandpa’s, etc. I don’t know if the eco streak has exploded among all us or if the economic crisis is getting up to its old tricks and paying for the public transportation ticket  hurts our soul, or just a mix of both. The issue is that Decathlon (mecca for all amateur sporty people and for those ones who want to practice all sports at a time and do none of them) has extended the area dedicated to this sport. There are more and more specialized shops and other multi-brand stores that sell an specific lifestyle where a bicycle is a must (Le Bon Marché, Colette, etc.). And if a bicycle is still too much to fit in their range of products, you have mainstream brands like Pull & Bear which has just launched a collection for the two wheels fans: simple, practical and with that urban touch so characteristic for this label. And when a bike by Pull & Bear?
I’m not a cycling crazy fan, but I’ve always been drawn by the bicycle as an object. Apart from its obvious purpose, it’s a simply beautiful mean of transportation; and if it’s being taken care of the smaller details, it can reach the highest position among the designer objects.
I’ve had several bicycles throughout my life. I’m repeating that I’m not a big fan of cycling, but I keep special memories about all of my bicycles and when I have the chance I always ride the two wheels either for going to the beach, buying bread or exploring the city. This is much easier in Shanghai. Despite you might be very careful when riding, there is an specific lane for bicycles and motorbikes, there is no slopes and traffic does not reach high speed. What at the beginning seems to be a chaos, it has its own order in the end.
My first wheels were a tricycle. I do not really remember when it exactly got home, but I know it was my parents’ gift. It was beautiful, with red seat, metallic structure and white and big wheels. I learned how to ride the two wheels and my sisters handed down the tricycle. After 16 or 17 years, the poor cycle passed away after a car accident. RIP. Dad had run over it with  his Land Rover at the garage entrance.
After that the G.A.C. arrived; maroon color; a gift from my godfather. At the beginning I was hardly able to reach the pedals. I used it for nine years and it was the team mate for many adventures and some fall… oops. It happened on that time that all kids have either a G.A.C either a BH either an Orbea. All of them where practically the same and the difference from one brand to the other were the tonalities and shades used on the colors.
The mountain bikes reached their popularity during the 90’s and I found the best excuse to exchange my G.A.C for  one of these ones with off-road wheels, speeds, balance wheels and pinions. My childhood bicycle had remained small. I remember that I was saving money for more than one year to purchase the mountain bike. I don’t really remember the brand, only that the gear change was made by Shimano. It was ugly, but I rode through small paths and roads during every summer holiday.
Since then the summer street life was finished. College arrived, internships… jobs stole time to ride the bike and this one would never be again in fashion among us binge drinking generation.
After this and occasionally some loans and rentals were appearing in my life. I inherited one from my Sartorialist; I tuned it with a very cute basket, so I could go on shopping. And I arrived at Shanghai where you can acquire a bicycle for less than 50 euros. The first sun beams last spring accelerated me to buy my retro Phoenix. Note that it’s like the ones the postmen from China Post ride. Up to now it has been behaving, but it’s Chinese quality, use and throw away… you understand, don’t you? So I’ll keep looking for beautiful bicycles like Shinola or En Selle Marcel that I’ve already shown you at La Última Tentación de Eva.
Here they are the memories of my bicycles and you, do you remember the pair of wheels that have been going through your lifes?

Gift Idea: Candles

Lately I have an obssesion with candles. I enter in every deco shop, concept store and so and I go directly to that corner where the candles are. And if they are scented candles, better. In that case I will be approaching my nose to every container until my olfactory ability has got so high that cannot bear more smells. So I decided that it's a very good gift for myself and now that Christmas holidays are closer, why not surprising with some scented candles? Here you have a small shopping.

The Leather Pants Dilemma

http://internationalfashionfromarnhem.blogspot.com

T BY ALEXANDER WANG

THE ROW

Some weeks ago I just realized that I've never had tried a pair of leather pants on. I've never had ones, not even fake leather/PU. At college and post-college era, a pair of leather pants was the most thing out you can imagine; either you could be faulted to be like that explosive woman on a leather jumpsuit for the cheap perfume Jacks commercial on TV either you just belonged to the gothic group at high school. None of these facets are for me. This season leather is all around us and pants in this format, even more. And what can I say about the fetiche piece for newyorkers? But if you think about it deeply... a pair of well-fitted leather pants look really really awsome. Leather must be soft, stick on your legs as if it was a pair of stockings or leggings, and the pattern of the piece mustn't let your butt look down, although there is no intention for a push-up effect. And the best part is that they are really warm. I reached all these conclusions because some days ago I started a series of mini-trips to different luxury stores in Shanghai. I told myself: if you're going to try some leather pants, they must be good at least.
The details are by order of fitting. It's not on purpose, but the results go from normal to wonderful.

T BY ALEXANDER WANG
These are more like the initial idea I had about leather pants: a little bit rigid and you don't like yourself inside them in the end.

THE ROW
I'm sorry for the Olsen twins, but they have wanted to design them so skinny but with a less flexible leather at the same time... that it's a little bit hard to get inside them... and after that you still have to breathe. I don't want to give it all up with this model because I couldn't try one size more.

RAG & BONE
From this point on everything is getting better. It's like wearing skinny jeans but with some structure, which they miraculously adapt to legs and hips. Just a personal but: I have half size left.

THEORY
Theory is all about basics with a special touch. I picked up three different models and I cannot tell which one to choose. All of them fit like a glove in your hand. It was like getting into a pair of leggings that you've been using for a while but everything is still in its place. The best ones, the 'Miana' style with that cut along the leg.

HELMUT LANG
In a brand like Helmut Lang skinny leather pants are a must among all white, black and grey pieces. These pants look like a second skin and the seam that slides down the legs helps to keep that structure up.

All this tour from one shop to the other, going in and out from the fitting room, bothering the staff on dutty who has no idea that I'm not going to buy any of those pieces because all of them are really far away from my budget... all these have made sense in the end. Now I know that I'm able to wear a pair of leather pants without feeling like Europe singer. Furthermore, from now on these pants are entering my wishlist for winter season. Each time I was getting inside of one of those pairs I repeated to myself: how warm and nice is to be here. Girls from Manhattan, now I understand you perfectly. It's not only that leather pants are fashion now, but also that with the icy temperatures you have over there it's reasonable that you stuff in a pair of those.

Pardon My Nightie

I've already told you that I do want this season never ends. Day after day I switch from my soldier boots to the biker ones, plaid shirts, oversized-woollen sweaters... but finally we add a little bit of delicacy to all this grunge muddle. I wished to wear it for the first time and when I did it, the comments and opinions started. I just hope that they are not talking really seriously because I've taken them as fun. The first one: what are you wearing? a nightie? I nodded and right after I got into my boots and cardigan and headed to the flower market. The second comment came from someone who suposedly knew a little bit more about that dress, however it was really intentionally saying... oh, you're wearing that dress-nightie!, and it kept going, it seems to be the latest fashion. Understood, half of office is fliping out. Courteney Love, Kate Moss, Calvin Klein... just forgive them because either they have lost part of their visual memory or they were learning to ride a bicycle on those ancient times, i.e. the 90's. Ok then, get ready because this is just the beginning. For next season even more... although the grunge touch gets softer.
