The Girl of the Emerald Green Stilettos and Socks

El lunes cuando iba a trabajar, desde el taxi vi a una chica que me llamó la atención por su forma de vestir, muy distinguida e interesante. No sé decir si era china, de Hong Kong, Corea… ni idea. Casi cien metros me separaban de ella. Llevaba unos vaqueros azules remangado por encima del tobillo con un abrigo a juego (azul marino, creo)… nada especial. Lo que de verdad me impactó fueron sus pies. Tacones de aguja con calcetines, primer shock. De color verde esmeralda, golpe mortal.

En mi actual tendencia a lo minimalista en el vestir, para mí es casi imposible que combine unos stilettos con calcetines. No haré nunca ninguna declaración del tipo “Nunca llevaré zapato de tacón con calcetines…” porque no confío lo suficiente en mi persona como para prometeros que una tendencia fuerte no me sepultará bajo un revival de la moda de los años 80 mientras canto Dress You Up de Madonna. Creo que esto no va a ocurrir, pero prefiero quedarme en la distancia… por si acaso.

Lo que de verdad es seguro (como que 2 más 2 son 4) es que nunca llevaré un par de stilettos de color verde esmeralda ni tampoco un par de calcetines de este verde radiante. Llevo pasándome al lado oscuro desde hace tiempo (o a la ausencia de color) y supongo que ahí permaneceré durante bastante tiempo. Perdonadme rosas, amarillos, verdes, naranjas… no tengo nada en vuestra contra.

Pero volvamos a esa chica espléndida que vi este lunes en Xintiandi. Esta parte de la ciudad se caracteriza por tener algunos de los restaurantes y tiendas más elegantes. Dos veces al año la Semana de la Moda de Shanghai ocupa la mitad del lago Taiping con las carpas blancas y allí se concentran las tropas más glamurosas en busca de un segundo de fama dentro del fenómeno del street style. Sé que las oficinas de alguna revista de moda también se encuentran en el barrio. Por todas estas razones no es para extrañarse encontrar a alguien con un toque de estilo y con un outfit tan atrevido. Es más, es realmente agradecido dar con este tipo de gente en contraste con el ejército de prendas y colores y texturas que no combinan ni forzando un poquito y que tus ojos tienen que sufrirlas cada día. Sí, en general los nativos no se preocupan mucho por la moda como nosotros, occidentales, le damos importancia y la entendemos.

Así que, chica de los tacones de aguja con calcetines verde esmeralda, muchas gracias por iluminarme la mañana del lunes. Tú eres una de las razones por las que Pantone ha elegido el Verde Esmeralda como el color del año 2013.

On Monday I saw a very stylish girl from the cab I was on my way to work. I cannot tell whether she was Chinese, from Hong Kong, Korea… no idea. Almost one hundred meters separated each other. She was wearing cropped blue jeans with a matching coat (navy blue, I think)… nothing special. Which it was really shocking was their feet. Stilettos with socks, first shock. In emerald green, lethal shock.

For me, at my current minimal mood on fashion is almost impossible I can wear both stilettos and socks at a once. I’ll never do any statement like “I’ll never wear stilettos with socks…” because I’m not confident enough to my persona to ensure that a big trend will not bury myself into an 80’s mood singing Dress You Up by Madonna. I think that this is not gonna happen, but I prefer to stand in the distance… just in case.

What it’s really sure (like 2 plus 2 is 4) is that I’ll never wear either a pair of emerald green stilettos or a pair of this radiant green socks. I’ve been turning into the dark side for a while (or the absence of color) and I guess I’ll remain there for a very long time. Forgive me pinks, yellows, greens, oranges… I do not have anything against you all.

But let’s go back to that gorgeous girl I saw last Monday at Xintiandi area. This part of the city is characterized by having some of the most posh restaurants and stores. Twice a year the Shanghai Fashion Week occupies half of the Taiping Lake with the white tents and the most glamorous troops around looking for a second of fame inside the street style phenomenon. I know that some fashion magazine has its headquarters in the area as well. Because of all these reasons it’s not so strange to find someone stylish and with such a daring outfit. Furthermore, it’s really thankful to find this kind of people in front of an army of un-matching pieces and colors and textures which your eyes have to suffer every day. Yes, in general the locals do not care much about fashion as we, western people, care about and understand it.

So, girl of the emerald green stilettos with socks, thank you very much to illuminate my Monday morning. You are one of the reasons because Pantone has chosen Emerald Green as the color of year 2013.
